Mental Health in Rural Wales: Why Supporting Farmers and Men Matters

Life in rural Wales offers a kind of beauty that’s hard to describe; open skies, rolling fields, and a quiet sense of connection to the land. But behind the peaceful views, many people are carrying more than we might realise. For farmers and rural men especially, the pressure to keep going can feel constant, and often, invisible.

At Trancespire, I often speak to people who feel stretched thin by the weight of responsibility, yet unsure how to ask for help. It’s not a lack of strength. It’s often a lifetime of being told to “just get on with it.”

Let’s talk about that.

The Hidden Load

Farming life doesn’t come with a pause button. The days are long, the work is physical, and there’s rarely time to stop and check in with how you’re really doing.

Many men have grown up believing they should just push through, stay strong, and avoid burdening others. But the truth is, strength isn’t about silence; it’s about knowing when to reach out.

You might recognise some of these quiet challenges:

  • You’re always working, but never feel “done”

  • There’s no time (or signal) for traditional support

  • You feel like you can’t talk about it; even with those closest to you

  • You’ve lost your go, but can’t explain why

You’re not alone in that. And you don’t have to carry it by yourself.

Why Farming Communities Need a Different Kind of Support

Studies show that people in farming are among the most vulnerable to mental health struggles. Not because they’re weaker, but because they often face unique barriers to getting support.

There’s good news, though: that conversation is starting to shift.

Organisations like The DPJ Foundation, Mid Powys Mind, and The Farming Community Network are doing amazing work across Wales to help reduce stigma and offer support in real, relatable ways.

But if you're not quite ready for a phone call or a group chat, there are still gentle ways to take the first step.

You Don’t Need to Talk About the Past to Move Forward

One of the biggest hesitations people share with me is this: “I don’t want to dig everything up. I just want to feel more like myself again.”

That’s exactly where Solution Focused Hypnotherapy comes in.

We don’t go over painful memories. We don’t analyse everything that’s gone wrong. Instead, we focus on:

  • What’s already working, even in small ways

  • How you’d like things to feel different

  • The small steps that can help you get there

It’s down-to-earth, forward-looking support — designed to work quietly in the background and help you feel lighter, more in control, and more like yourself again.

A Quiet Space to Breathe

Whether you’re mid-harvest, looking after livestock, or simply trying to get through the week - this work fits around you.

You can expect:

  • Flexible sessions – online or in-person near Brecon

  • Short-term, practical support – no pressure, no labels

  • Calm, strength-based conversations – focused on what’s possible

  • Gentle hypnosis – to help your brain rest, reset, and reconnect

You Don’t Have to Keep Carrying It Alone

There’s no shame in feeling low, worn out, or stuck in your own head. It doesn’t make you weak. It makes you human.

If you’re a farmer, a rural worker, or someone who’s always been the one others rely on — this is your reminder: it’s okay to need someone in your corner too.

And if that sounds like something you’d like, I’d love to help.
