Your Brain & Your Running

This page is for every runner who's ever talked themselves out of finishing, hit the same wall at the same mile, or stood at a start line with their heart racing before they've taken a single step.

On the 26th of February I gave a talk to Builth & District Running Club about what's actually happening in your brain when you run - and what you can do about it. Whether you were there on the night or you're discovering this for the first time, everything is here for you, completely free.

Watch the Full Talk

In this 23-minute talk I cover the science behind what's actually happening in your brain when you run, and why it sometimes feels like it's working against you.

We explore race anxiety and why your Caveman treats a start line like a genuine threat, the mile 8 wall and why your brain creates that sensation before your muscles have even given up, limiting beliefs and how they get filed away as facts, flow state and what's actually happening in your brain when everything just clicks, and how hypnotherapy can help you retrain those old programmes so your brain becomes your biggest asset rather than your biggest obstacle.

Whether you were at the talk on the night or you're discovering this for the first time - I hope something in here resonates.

Free Guided Hypnosis for Runners

This free guided hypnosis track is designed specifically for runners. Find a quiet space, get comfortable, and let your brain do the rest.

How to Use This Track

Find somewhere quiet and comfortable to lie down headphones are helpful but not essential. The track is around 25 minutes. Just press play and let it guide you. It's completely normal to drift in and out, or even fall asleep before it ends - there's no wrong way to experience this. Most people describe it as similar to that drowsy state just before sleep. With regular listening you may find the mental chatter starts to ease, both in your running and day to day.

Please don't listen while driving, running, or operating machinery.

Hi, I’m Lorraine Sheppard…

…a little bit about me and why I’m so passionate about mental health and the journey I’m currently on.

Have you ever wondered why our minds sometimes feel like they’re working against us, why thoughts spiral, feelings overwhelm, and we get stuck in patterns we don’t want? That curiosity about the human mind has stayed with me my whole life.

Before becoming a hypnotherapist, I worked in IT and accounts. That background taught me to be practical, detail-oriented, and solution-focused, skills I now bring to helping people find positive ways forward.

My passion for mental health grew from personal experience. I’ve faced anxiety and depression and know how isolating they can feel. But I’ve also discovered something life-changing: real, lasting change is possible - often sooner than you’d expect.

That’s why I love being a Solution Focused Hypnotherapist. This approach is positive and empowering, it builds on your strengths and looks to the future, not the past. I feel privileged to help people uncover their resources and create lasting change. Many clients say they feel lighter, more hopeful, and in control after just a few sessions. Together, we work as a team, with you leading the way, because no one knows your life better than you.

I’m proud to have trained at the Clifton Practice - where this powerful method was born, giving me a solid foundation in a proven approach that works.

Outside of therapy, I’m a mum of two lively boys who keep me smiling every day. I love walking the Brecon Beacons, listening to podcasts, and learning wherever I can. I bring that same curiosity, positivity, and warmth to every session.

If you’re ready to take positive steps towards lasting change, I’d love to support you on your journey. You matter. Your future matters. And together, we can make it brighter.
