What Is Solution Focused Hypnotherapy?

If you've been looking into hypnotherapy and feeling a bit overwhelmed by all the different types, you're not alone. Clinical hypnotherapy, analytical hypnotherapy, cognitive behavioural hypnotherapy - it's a lot.

So what makes solution focused hypnotherapy different? And why does it matter?

Here's a clear, honest explanation.

what is solution focused hypnotherapy

It Starts with a Different Question

Most traditional therapies begin by asking: what's wrong, and how did it get this way?

Solution focused hypnotherapy starts somewhere else entirely: where do you want to be, and what would need to change to get there?

That shift sounds simple, but it changes everything about how the work feels. Rather than spending sessions revisiting painful experiences or analysing the past, we focus on your strengths, your goals, and the small steps that move you toward them.

You're not broken. You don't need fixing. You have resources and abilities that, with the right conditions, can create real and lasting change.

The Neuroscience Behind It

Solution focused hypnotherapy isn't mystical - it's grounded in modern neuroscience.

Your primitive brain is wired for survival, constantly scanning for threat. When it's overactive - due to anxiety, stress, low mood, or difficult life circumstances - it floods your body with cortisol and pushes your rational, thinking brain to one side. You get stuck in unhelpful patterns that can feel impossible to shift through willpower alone.

Hypnotherapy works by calming that stress response and creating a deeply relaxed state - similar in brain activity to REM sleep - where your mind becomes more open to new ways of thinking and responding. In this state, your brain can begin forming new neural pathways - the technical term is neuroplasticity - replacing old unhelpful patterns with ones that actually serve you.

You're not being controlled or reprogrammed. You're giving your brain the right conditions to do what it naturally wants to do: heal and adapt.

How a Session Works

Every solution focused hypnotherapy session has two parts.

The first part is a conversation - around 30 minutes - that focuses on what's been going well since we last met, however small, and what you'd like to move toward. It's not traditional talking therapy. There's no analysis of the past and no pressure to explore anything you're not ready for. It's forward-looking, practical, and often surprisingly uplifting even when things feel difficult.

The second part is the hypnosis itself - around 25 minutes of guided relaxation. You settle back, close your eyes, and I guide you into a calm, focused state. Your conscious mind quietens. In that space, I offer gentle suggestions that support the goals we've discussed.

You remain completely aware throughout. You can open your eyes or move at any time. Most people describe it as feeling like that lovely drowsy state just before sleep - deeply restful and refreshing.

What It Helps With

Solution focused hypnotherapy is effective for a wide range of presentations, including:

  • Anxiety and stress - helping your nervous system return to a calmer baseline

  • Depression and low mood - rebuilding hope and motivation gently

  • Sleep problems - the relaxation techniques alone often improve sleep within the first few sessions

  • Phobias - specific fears respond particularly well to this approach

  • Low confidence and self-worth - building on existing strengths rather than focusing on deficits

  • Unwanted habits and behaviours

  • Performance anxiety - whether in sport, work, or public speaking
